The experience
Shisen-dō was built in 1641 by the poet Ishikawa Jōzan as a place to write, and to grow old. Before the temple opens to the public, its gate is unlocked for your group only. Walk the garden with no one else on the path, sit on the veranda where he sat, and hear the shishi-odoshi strike the stone. A quiet that not even a Kyoto native can arrange.
